Château Lafite Rothschild, the name itself a whisper of prestige in the world of fine wine, needs little introduction. Their 1978 vintage whispers tales of royalty, finesse, and enduring grace, offering a tasting experience that transcends mere wine.

Rooted in Legacy:

Lafite Rothschild's pedigree is as prestigious as its wines. Founded in the 17th century, it earned the moniker "The King's Wine" at Versailles. In 1787, American Founding Father Thomas Jefferson acquired a passion for the wines of Lafite upon visiting Bordeaux whilst serving as America's ambassador. He composed a list classifying what he considered to be the top wines of the Médoc, including Château Lafite with Château Margaux, La Tour Segur and Haut-Brion with remarkable accuracy; 75 years later, Lafite was one of the four château to be ranked as first growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. This storied history culminates in the meticulously tended 112-hectare vineyard, bathed in sunshine and blessed with gravel and limestone soils.

Unveiling the Masterpiece:

The 1978 Lafite Rothschild unfurls in a tapestry of aromas. Ripe cassis mingles with hints of cedar, tobacco, and a touch of earthy spice, hinting at the complexity to come. On the palate, a burst of vibrant acidity awakens the senses, paving the way for a full-bodied experience. Densely textured tannins frame the rich core of noble Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, each drop delivering a symphony of power and elegance.

A Toast to the Critics:

The 1978 Lafite has drawn universal acclaim, captivating the hearts and palates of the elite:

  • Jeff Leve (The Wine Cellar Insider): 94/100, "Cassis, cedar, tobacco, graphite, earth and spice on the nose. The wine is full bodied, concentrated and still tannic. The fruit is best described at noble. You can sense its good breeding. But there is an austerity and a hint of under ripeness in the finish that takes away from the wine. The long, rich, cassis and rhubarb filled finish is joy, but the sense of under ripeness takes away from the pleasure. Fans of older, more traditional, less ripe wines will like this more than I did"
  • Jancis Robinson: 17.5/20
  • La Revue du Vin de France: 18/20
